School of Natural and Social Sciences at Susquehanna names dean | Local News

As dean of the Faculty of Natural and Social Sciences, Straub will oversee 8 academic departments comprised of 71 school members.

Straub joined Susquehanna in 2002 as assistant professor of earth and environmental sciences. She was promoted to affiliate professor in 2008 and reached full professor standing in 2014, at which time she was also elected chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

In 2017, Straub was named director of Susquehanna’s Middle for Environmental Education and learning and Analysis. In this placement, she created the Office of Sustainability and hired and mentored the university’s first sustainability coordinator, both of which led to Susquehanna’s 2020 silver certification by the Affiliation for the Progression of Sustainability in Bigger Instruction Sustainability Tracking and Reporting System.

As director of the CEER, Straub also oversees the Freshwater Investigate Institute, an externally funded ecology lab with two complete-time workers members, and the 87-acre CEER assets adjacent to campus that includes a 3-megawatt photo voltaic array, ecology and environmental science investigate websites, a demonstration riparian buffer, apiary and a college student-operate campus backyard garden. She designed a 2021 summer season internship software by way of the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Training that put pupils with partner organizations and offered intentional vocational discernment programming, something she designs to broaden on as dean. She also co-wrote proposals major to $1.6 million in funding to guidance the work and study of the FRI.

Straub acquired her bachelor’s diploma in earth and planetary sciences from Harvard College in 1994. She went on to earn her master’s diploma and doctorate in atmospheric science from Colorado Condition University in 1999 and 2002, respectively.
