Andrew Delbanco, the Alexander Hamilton Professor of American Reports at Columbia College and president of the Teagle Foundation, will deliver the 2022 Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities, the Nationwide Endowment for the Humanities announced Thursday.
NEH’s Jefferson Lecture is the maximum honor the federal authorities bestows for distinguished intellectual achievement in the humanities. The Jefferson Lecture was set up by NEH in 1972, and this year will mark the 50th anniversary of the honorary lecture sequence. Soon after a two-yr hiatus due to the pandemic, the lecture will return as a live in-human being event.
Delbanco will deliver his lecture, “The Query of Reparations: Our Earlier, Our Present, Our Long term,” at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 19 at the President Lincoln’s Cottage historic web-site and museum in Washington, D.C. Delbanco will tackle reparations for slavery in the United States, using background, philosophy and literature to study a large assortment of views on the debate.
